Phi Movement

Move as only you can move

A movement practice exploring what happens when we stop telling the body how to move and begin listening to how it wants to move.

What is
Phi Movement?

A different way to move

Phi Movement is a practice of spontaneous movement that begins with listening.

Instead of deciding what a movement should look like, we become curious about the movement that is already beginning inside us. A shift of weight. A breath. A twitch. A stretch. An impulse to turn, reach, fold, shake, pause or move across the room.

We follow those impulses and allow one movement to lead into the next, discovering a way of moving that belongs to our own body.

I call this our unique somatic signature: the shapes, rhythms, gestures and pathways that emerge when we give the body enough space to speak for itself.

The starting point

The body
speaks first.

Most of us have learned to move from the outside in. We see a movement, copy it and ask our body to reproduce the shape.

Phi Movement reverses that relationship.

We become still enough to notice what the body is asking for, then allow the mind to witness and follow.

There is no choreography to remember and no correct shape to achieve. The practice is an invitation to become fascinated by your own movement.

01

Listen

Notice the smallest impulses before turning them into movement. Begin with what is already happening rather than deciding what should happen next.

02

Follow

Allow one movement to suggest another. Follow the threads your body gives you without needing to know where they are leading.

03

Express

Give yourself permission to move in ways that feel unfamiliar, beautiful, strange, subtle, powerful or completely ordinary.

04

Discover

Over time, begin recognising your own movement language and the physical signature that appears when you stop trying to move like anybody else.

The class

From listening
into dance.

01 / ARRIVE

Come into the body.

We begin slowly, creating space to arrive, notice and become aware of what is happening inside the body before we ask it to go anywhere.

02 / EXPLORE

Enter Phi Movement.

Through guided movement explorations, we practise listening for physical impulses, following them and discovering our own spontaneous movement language.

03 / DANCE

Let it become dance.

The class opens into a free dance session with music, giving you space to take what you have discovered and let your body go wherever it wants to go.

Dance. Without choreography

After the practice

Each Phi Movement class is followed by a dance session.

There are no steps to remember and no performance to give. The music becomes another thing to listen to, respond to and play with.

You can move wildly. Barely move at all. Repeat something for ten minutes. Change direction. Stop. Begin again.

The dance is yours.

You do not need to be a dancer. You do not need to be flexible, coordinated or know what you're doing. Come with a body and a willingness to listen to it.
